"Get Your Inheritance"
Day Twenty: Psalm 37:11 "But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace." (NKJV)
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines the word meek as "enduring injury with patience and without resentment; deficient in spirit and courage; not violent or strong." Often when people describe someone as being meek it gives the impression that the person is weak. It is a common assumption that if a person is meek he or she is not able to help themselves. The Lord Jesus, however, was meek because He knew that in spite of the circumstances, in spite of the way He was treated or mistreated He had all of heaven backing Him up. The meekness displayed by Christ is the fruit of power. It is easy to give in to negativity and criticism by firing back. Rather, it takes more strength to refrain from engaging in the spiritually immature games that the adversary wants to play.
Titus 3:2 charges Christians to show meekness toward all men. This is a challenge for us as believers when so many people are expressing themselves through conversation, social media and other media outlets in ways that can sometimes become enraging. As a believer we are not to respond as the world responds, we are to follow the example of Christ. The opposite of meekness is self-assertiveness and self-interest. If you are not concerned with being meek it may feel good initially to give someone a piece of your mind or to get some things off your chest but how does that behavior exemplify the incarnation of Jesus Christ in your life?
What will people think of you if you don’t fight back, if you don’t try to get even, if you just walk away? Some people may think that you’ve lost your mind or that you must not have heard what was said. Our greatest concern is what the Lord thinks of us on a daily basis. What will the Lord say to you when you demonstrate meekness? It’s in His word in Psalm 37:11, "But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace." Yes, there are benefits to being meek. You have a great reward from our heavenly Father. You will inherit the earth and have an abundance of peace. I know that you don’t want to miss receiving you inheritance. So, the next time you are tempted to walk in the flesh remember that God has an inheritance for you and if you stay in His will and in His word, you’re going to get your inheritance!
Father we thank You today that You are empowering us to manifest meekness in our daily walk with You. There are times when we are tempted to respond to people, events or circumstances in ways that we know are not pleasing to You. Help us to be Your reflection in the earth. Allow our words to be seasoned with grace and bring joy, hope and comfort to everyone we meet. In Jesus’ name Amen.
