"A Time for Spiritual Renewal"
Day Nine: Psalm 103:5 "Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."
Among all of the many birds within God's glorious creation, I've always had a fascination with the eagle. The eagle is such a majestic bird. The eagle is known for its great vision. He can see great distances as much as fifty miles away. Studies show that the eagle can look directly into the sunlight without being blinded. The eagle is also known to soar at high altitudes in comparison to other birds. What a magnificent bird!
When the Psalmist speaks about the benefits provided to the believer, he refers to our youth being renewed like that of an eagle. This is so powerful. You see the eagle is full of life and has the ability to endure. How does he do this? By the time the eagle is 30years old, life gets really difficult. Its physical condition has deteriorated to the point where survival is tough. Its talons lose flexibility and can't properly grip the prey. Its beak becomes dull and often breaks off. Its wing feathers get heavy and dull such that its flight ability is greatly impaired. However, the eagle does not give up and die. What does he do? I'm so glad that you asked. The eagle retreats to a mountain top and over a period of five months (known as a moulting period) goes through a metamorphosis or a series of physical development and trimming). It knocks off its beak by banging it against the rock. It plucks out its talons and then its feathers. Each stage produces regrowth of the removed body parts allowing the eagle to live for another 30-40 years. No wonder the Bible says "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength and they shall mount up on wings like eagles..."(Isaiah 40:31). In the Hebrew text, it's translated as "they shall exchange their strength."
I said all of that to say that in these first 21 days of the 2018, we are in the midst of our "moulting" season. This is a time of spiritual development and spiritual trimming for spiritual renewal. Let's trim our "old beak" (mouth) against the rock (Christ) so that we can only speak life to our situations. Allow God to remove and replace the old feathers and wings so that we can fly to even higher heights in this new season.
Let's use this time of consecration to pray, fast, worship, and praise our God. The Psalmist declares that in the midst of this process our "youth" shall be renewed liked the eagle. This brings a clearer understanding of the scripture that says, "praise is comely for the upright!" Praise looks good on you! Allow God to renew your mind, refresh your spirit, revive your soul, and rejuvenate your physical body so that you can go forth and do great Kingdom exploits in 2018!
Father, I thank you for my moulting season. Your Word declares that you are the God that satisfies my mouth with good things! You are the God that renews my youth like that of the eagle. Father, I pray that you would make me over again that I might be renewed for Kingdom service. Give me "eagle eyed" vision that I might see with precision and clarity into my future. Mold me, make me, break me, shape me into what You would have for me to be. Purge, trim, nip, and tuck so that I might be renewed in Jesus' name, Amen!
